Who makes Workout Samurai
A small team building one app about one movement. This page is the part most product sites skip: who is behind it, how the training advice here is put together, and where the limits are.
The short answer
Workout Samurai is a push-up game for iOS and Android, built by a small independent team. The app counts push-ups on-device with your phone's camera and turns verified reps into a dojo campaign, samurai titles and ranked seasons. The training content on this site follows established strength methodology and cites its sources.
What we are building
One app, about one movement. Workout Samurai counts push-ups using your phone's camera, entirely on the device, and turns those verified reps into a game: a dojo campaign of chapters and bosses, samurai titles from Ashigaru to Daimyo, clans with a weekly clan boss, and ranked seasons from Bronze to Master. It is out now on the App Store and Google Play, listed as Workout Samurai: Push-Ups, and it is free to download and free to play. The download page has both links.
The narrow scope is deliberate. A phone camera can count a push-up honestly; it cannot honestly count six hundred exercises. Once the reps are machine-counted and server-validated, everything built on top of them, the progression, the titles, the leaderboards, means something. That trade is the whole product decision, and it is why the app does one thing rather than forty.
What the app does, and what it does not
It is worth being blunt about this, because plenty of fitness apps are vague about it on purpose. Workout Samurai is a push-up game. It counts the push-ups you do and it gives them somewhere to go. It is not a coach and it does not write you a training programme.
- It counts standard push-ups with on-device pose detection, and it does not identify or score variations.
- It never uploads video. Frames are processed on your phone and discarded; only the rep count is submitted, and the server validates it. The detail is on on-device rep counting.
- It does not tell you what to train. There is no prescribed session, no adaptive plan and no schedule inside the app. If you want a plan, the guides and tools on this site are free and open to everyone.
- It does not train your back, legs or cardiovascular base. It is push-ups. That is the scope, and pretending otherwise would be the easiest lie on this page.
- It is not a medical device, and nothing in it is medical advice.
A note from the maker
I kept starting push-up challenges and quietly quitting them. What I wanted was a counter I could not argue with, and a rank that meant something because I did the reps to get it. So I built the game I wanted to play: the camera counts, the server checks, and the only way up the board is push-ups. A wallet cannot do them for you. What this can offer is an honest floor to start from.
How the training content here is written
Everything in the guides is written by the team building the app. The methodology is the conventional one and we say where it comes from: a graded push-up progression in the hundred-push-ups tradition, the 2-for-2 progression rule, genuine rest days between hard sessions, and periodic re-tests against a real max rather than a remembered one. None of that is a feature of the app. It is training advice, published free, for anyone who wants it.
- Sources are named on the page. Where a guide cites a standard, a position stand or a study, it is listed in a sources block at the foot with enough detail to check.
- Numbers come from primary sources. The push-up norms tables and the military scoring tables were transcribed from the published documents, not from other blogs reprinting them.
- We publish what we could not verify. Where a branch's scoring tables could not be obtained from an official source, the guide says so and omits the table rather than reprinting figures we could not confirm.
- Dates are on every page. Standards change. A guide with no date is a guide you cannot trust.
- Corrections are welcome. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and say what changed.
What we will not claim
It is easier to list the temptations than to describe the principle. These are the things this site does not do, and will not start doing when it would be convenient:
- No invented ratings or review counts. The store listing does not yet show enough ratings to display, so there are no stars anywhere on this site and no review markup in its structured data. Those appear the day real store ratings do.
- No fabricated testimonials or download numbers.
- No promised physique outcomes. Push-ups build pressing strength and endurance. What that looks like on you depends on things no app controls.
- No pretending the app is broader than it is. It counts standard push-ups. It does not detect variations, it does not coach you, and it does not train your back or legs.
- No rank for sale. Gems buy cosmetics. There is no path anywhere in the app from money to a higher place on the leaderboard, and the subscription is deliberately built so that there never is.

Frequently asked questions
Who makes Workout Samurai?
Workout Samurai is built by a small independent team. It is a single app about a single movement, push-ups counted on-device by your phone's camera, and it is available now on the App Store and Google Play under the name Workout Samurai: Push-Ups.
Is Workout Samurai a real company?
Workout Samurai is the operator of the app and this site, contactable at support@workoutsamurai.com. The privacy policy and terms of service set out the legal relationship in full, including who is responsible for what, which jurisdiction applies, and how disputes are handled.
Where can I download Workout Samurai?
From the App Store on iPhone and Google Play on Android, listed as Workout Samurai: Push-Ups. It is free to download and free to play. The download page on this site carries both store links, and the app ships in English, Spanish, German, Japanese, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese.
Does the app tell me what workout to do?
No. Workout Samurai counts the push-ups you do and turns them into campaign progress, titles and season rank. It does not prescribe sessions, build an adaptive plan or schedule your rest. If you want a plan, the guides and the free programme generator on this site provide one, and neither requires the app.
Who writes the training guides on this site?
The team building the app. The guides cite their sources on the page, carry visible update dates, and state plainly where a figure could not be verified from a primary source. No third-party guest content is published on this domain, which is part of why the guides can be trusted.
Are the push-up standards on this site accurate?
They are transcribed from the published source documents and each table names its source and date. Where an official table could not be obtained, and several military branches publish behind access controls, the guide says so and omits the table rather than reprinting unverified numbers.
Is the training advice medical advice?
No. Everything here is general fitness information for a general audience, not medical advice, and not a substitute for a qualified clinician. Consult a physician before beginning a new exercise programme, and stop if you experience pain, dizziness or shortness of breath.
Why does the app only do push-ups?
Because a phone camera can count a push-up honestly and cannot honestly count six hundred exercises. Verified reps are what make the campaign, the titles and the leaderboard mean anything, so the scope narrowed until the counting could be trusted completely.
Does Workout Samurai have user reviews or ratings?
The store listing does not yet show enough ratings to display an overview, so there are deliberately no star ratings anywhere on this site and no review markup in its structured data. Inventing them would be dishonest and would breach search engines' structured-data policies.
How do I report an error on this site?
Email support@workoutsamurai.com with the page and what is wrong. If a figure or a claim here is incorrect we will correct it and update the page's date. Corrections to the standards and norms tables are especially welcome, since those are the pages where being wrong matters most.
Can I write for or partner with Workout Samurai?
Get in touch at support@workoutsamurai.com. We do not publish third-party guest content on this domain. Everything here is written by the team building the app, and keeping it that way is part of why the guides can be trusted at all.
Is Workout Samurai available worldwide?
The app is on both stores globally and ships in English, Spanish, German, Japanese, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese. This website is currently English only. Store availability is set per country by the App Store and Google Play, so your own store listing is the place to check what applies to you.
