Push-up variations ranked from easiest to hardest
Push-up variations rank from easiest to hardest by two things: the share of your body mass that ends up in your hands, and how long the lever is between your hands and your feet. Wall push-ups put almost nothing in the hands. One-arm push-ups put nearly everything in one hand while the trunk fights rotation. Everything else sits somewhere between.
The tiers below are training tiers, not official categories. Tier 1 is where a complete beginner starts; tier 3 is the standard push-up and its close relatives; tier 6 is the small handful of variations most people never need. Difficulty within a tier varies with your build, your wrists and your shoulder health, so treat the ordering as a strong default rather than a law. Before working through it, make sure the standard you are measuring against is real. Push-up form covers what actually counts as a rep.

How do you choose your next push-up variation?
Choose your next push-up variation when the current one has stopped being hard. The practical test is repeatability: if you can complete around 12 to 15 clean reps at full depth, in the same form on the last rep as the first, on two separate sessions, the variation has done its job and it is time to step up a tier.
That rule is a bodyweight translation of the 2-for-2 rule from the ACSM position stand on progression models, which advises increasing the load once you can exceed the target repetitions by one or two on two consecutive training sessions. A push-up has no weight stack, so the load increase has to come from somewhere else: a longer lever, a higher foot position, a narrower hand position, or one fewer limb.
Confirm the current variation is genuinely finished
Twelve to fifteen clean reps at full depth, twice, with the last rep looking like the first. If the hips drift or the depth shortens as the set goes on, you are not finished with it.
Move one step, not three
Take the next row down the table rather than the exciting one four rows lower. The gaps in the ranking are deliberately small so that each jump costs you a few reps rather than most of them.
Expect the rep count to fall
A step up should cost roughly a third of your reps. If you can only manage two or three, the step was too big. If nothing changed, it was too small.
Keep the old variation for volume
Do the harder variation first while you are fresh, then finish the session with sets of the easier one. This is how you add difficulty without losing weekly volume.
Re-test every couple of weeks
Progress on paper is not progress. Take an honest maximum set of standard push-ups every two weeks or so, and let that number, rather than your enthusiasm, decide the next step.
The easiest push-up variations for beginners
The easiest push-up variations are the wall push-up, the countertop incline push-up, the bench incline push-up, the knee push-up and the negative push-up. All five reduce the load reaching your hands without changing the movement, which is the whole point: you are practising the same skill at a weight you can control.
Incline push-ups are generally the better regression of the two obvious options, because they preserve the full-body plank that a knee push-up removes. A knee push-up shortens the lever at the knee, which lowers the trunk demand more than it lowers the pressing demand. That is useful, but it means the core never learns to hold the line. If you have a sturdy surface at any height, incline push-ups are worth defaulting to and lowering by a few centimetres at a time.
Negative push-ups deserve more attention than they get. Lowering yourself over five seconds from the top of a floor push-up and then resetting on the knees builds strength through the exact range you cannot yet press, and it is the single fastest route from no push-ups to one push-up. The hardest push-up variations, and what they really require
The hardest push-up variations are the one-arm push-up with a narrow foot stance, the pseudo-planche push-up and the typewriter push-up. What makes them hard is not chest strength. It is the combination of one-sided loading, a trunk that has to resist rotation, and a shoulder position that puts the front of the joint under unusual demand.
The one-arm push-up in particular is frequently misunderstood as a chest exercise you unlock by having a big enough chest. It is closer to an anti-rotation core exercise with a press attached. The obliques on the unloaded side work extremely hard to stop the hips turning, which is why the foot stance is the main dial: feet wide is a genuinely different exercise from feet together, and most people should spend months at the wide version.
Pseudo-planche push-ups are the other honest test, and the one most likely to cause trouble. Leaning the shoulders forward past the hands loads the anterior deltoid and the serratus anterior at a mechanical disadvantage, and the wrists take an extension angle they are not used to. Build the lean as an isometric hold first, add reps second, and stop entirely if the front of the shoulder or the wrist starts talking.
Are wide push-ups harder than diamond push-ups?
Wide push-ups are not harder than diamond push-ups, and they are not better for the chest either. Wide hand positions produce the lowest muscle activation of the common push-up hand positions, in both the pectoralis major and the triceps brachii, while narrow and diamond positions produce the highest in both.
Cogley and colleagues measured EMG activity in forty subjects across shoulder-width, wide and narrow hand positions and found greater activation in both muscles in the narrow position than the wide one. A 2026 comparison of standard, diamond and wide push-ups reported the same ranking, with diamond push-ups eliciting the highest activation of both the triceps brachii and the pectoralis major, and wide push-ups the lowest. Marcolin and colleagues, testing five variants across twelve muscles, likewise found the narrow variant greatest for both.
The practical reading is that wide push-ups shorten the range and open the shoulder further without buying anything in return, so they belong in the ranking as a variation rather than as a progression. How push-up variations map onto your standard push-up
Your standard push-up number and the variation ranking answer different questions. The number measures what you can do with the one movement everything else is built on. The ranking tells you which harder movements are reasonable to train at that point. The stages below are training guidance for choosing variations, keyed to the standard push-up and nothing else. One thing worth stating plainly: chasing variations is not a substitute for chasing the number. If your goal is a hundred consecutive push-ups, most of your training should be standard push-ups, because that is the movement being tested. Variations are seasoning. Does the app count push-up variations?
No. Workout Samurai's camera counts standard push-ups. The on-device pose detection looks for the shape of a rep: wrists planted, a real descent past a depth floor, then a real ascent. It does not identify, classify or score diamond, archer, decline, one-arm or any other variation as a distinct movement. There is no variation library inside the counter.
That is a deliberate limitation rather than an oversight. Counting one movement well is a solvable problem; classifying twenty movements from a single phone camera reliably enough to gate progression on is a different and much harder one. Since samurai titles, the dojo campaign and clan contributions all run on verified reps, the honest choice is to verify one movement properly. In practice this means treating variation work as training that sits alongside the app rather than inside it. Point the camera at your standard sets and let those be the reps that count towards your title and your dojo progress. Do your diamond, decline and archer work as you would any other accessory training, and judge it by whether your standard push-up numbers improve.
How many push-up variations should you train at once?
Train two or three push-up variations at once, not ten. A typical week has one main variation you are trying to progress, one easier variation used for volume, and optionally one accessory variation fixing a specific weakness. Beyond that, no single variation gets enough exposure to improve, and you end up sampling rather than training.
- The main variation is the one at the edge of your ability, done first in the session while you are fresh. Progress this one deliberately using the rules above.
- The volume variation is one or two tiers easier, done afterwards for sets you can complete without form breaking down. This is where most of your weekly repetitions should live.
- The accessory variation targets a specific weak point: push-up plus for winging shoulder blades, tempo push-ups for depth, negatives for a sticking point at the bottom.
- Everything else waits. A variation you do once a fortnight is a demonstration, not training.
Rotating variations too often is also a good way to lose track of whether you are actually getting stronger, because you never repeat the same test. Keep the standard push-up as your fixed measuring stick regardless of what else you are training, and the picture stays honest. If your standard maximum has not moved after a month of variation work, the variations have become entertainment rather than training.

Are diamond push-ups harder than regular push-ups?
Diamond push-ups are harder than regular push-ups. Bringing the hands together lengthens the elbow's range of motion and shifts a larger share of the work onto the triceps, and published EMG comparisons place diamond push-ups highest for both triceps and chest activation. Expect to lose roughly a third of your reps when you switch from standard to diamond.
Are wide push-ups easier than regular push-ups?

How do I progress to a one-arm push-up?
Progress to a one-arm push-up through archer push-ups, then one-arm eccentrics, then assisted one-arm push-ups with the spare hand on a raised surface you lower over time, then the full movement with the feet wide, and only then with the feet together. The limiting factor is usually anti-rotation core strength rather than chest strength, so expect the build-up to take months.
Are archer push-ups a good substitute for one-arm push-ups?
Archer push-ups are the best available stepping stone to one-arm push-ups. The supporting arm stays extended and provides a measurable amount of help, so the working side takes most of the load while the trunk practises resisting rotation. Reduce the assistance gradually by straightening the support arm further and shifting more weight onto the working side.
